Huione Crypto Laundering Boss Extradited to China

- Li Xiong, a high-ranking official within the Chen Zhi criminal syndicate and former chairman of Huione Group, has been extradited from Cambodia to China.
- The Huione Group allegedly operated a massive illicit marketplace that facilitated the laundering of more than $89 billion in cryptocurrency assets.
- This legal action follows a series of international crackdowns, including the seizure of over 127,271 Bitcoin worth approximately $15 billion by US authorities.
Extradition and Legal Proceedings
On April 1, a specialized task force from China’s Ministry of Public Security successfully escorted Li Xiong from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, back to China. According to official statements, the extradition was the result of close cooperation between Chinese and Cambodian authorities. Li Xiong is identified as a core member of an organized crime group led by Chen Zhi, and he now faces serious charges related to large-scale fraud and money laundering.
The Role of Huione Group in Crypto Scams
Li Xiong previously held the position of chairman at Huione Group, an entity accused of providing critical financial infrastructure for scam centers across Southeast Asia. These centers are notorious for executing pig butchering schemes and various fraudulent investment programs. The group's platform functioned as a primary hub for cybercriminals, processing an estimated $89 billion in crypto transactions. By providing a venue to move and clean stolen funds, the organization enabled global theft targeting victims' digital assets.
Global Impact and Regulatory Actions
The extradition of Li Xiong marks a significant milestone in the dismantling of the Chen Zhi syndicate. This follows the arrest of Chen Zhi himself three months prior. In October, the US Department of Justice made headlines by seizing 127,271 Bitcoin from Zhi, a haul valued at over $15 billion.
Simultaneously, the US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued directives to US financial institutions to terminate all payment processing and account ties associated with the Huione Group. Chinese officials have stated that other members of the syndicate are being apprehended systematically and have issued a public warning for remaining fugitives to surrender to avoid harsher penalties.
