eToro Debuts Crypto Trading in New York After Long Wait
- eToro officially launches cryptocurrency trading for New York residents more than three years after securing its regulatory license.
- The platform initially offers 20 tokens to New York users, a smaller subset compared to the 115 assets available in other regions.
- Company leadership cites post-FTX regulatory scrutiny and a focus on its IPO as factors for the delayed rollout.
Expansion into the New York Market
The global trading platform eToro has finalized the rollout of cryptocurrency services to its clients in New York. This launch comes a significant period after the firm was granted a Virtual Currency Business Activity License, commonly known as a BitLicense, by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) in February 2023.
According to Andrew McCormick, Head of eToro U.S., the service will start with approximately 20 digital tokens approved within the state's strict regulatory perimeter. This is a scaled-down offering compared to the 115 crypto assets the firm provides in 74 countries and 47 other U.S. states. Moving forward, the company intends to expand its New York offerings to include:
- Additional cryptocurrency tokens over time
- Staking services, which are currently in the regulatory pipeline
- Integrated access alongside other asset classes like stocks and ETFs
Navigating Regulatory Hurdles
The path to activation in New York was notably lengthy. Since the introduction of the BitLicense in 2015, fewer than 40 firms have successfully obtained the credential. McCormick noted that while the license was granted in early 2023, the firm had been in the application process during the collapse of FTX. This event significantly increased the level of diligence and scrutiny applied by regulators.
eToro stands as the first firm to be granted a BitLicense following the FTX fallout. While McCormick admitted the company wished the launch had occurred sooner, he emphasized the importance of meeting the high standards for compliance, anti-money laundering (AML), and customer protection set by the NYDFS.
Strategic Timing and Federal Outlook
Beyond regulatory approvals, eToro attributed the timing of its launch to broader strategic and political factors. The firm focused heavily on its initial public offering (IPO) last year and navigated a domestic environment under the Biden administration that McCormick described as unfriendly toward crypto investment and growth.
Looking toward the future, the firm expressed a preference for federal clarity over the current fragmented state-by-state framework. McCormick highlighted the need for legislation like the Clarity Act to move beyond outdated standards, referring to the reliance on 1930s securities laws and 1940s Supreme Court cases as insufficient for modern digital assets. Currently, eToro continues to restrict crypto services in states with similar complexities, such as Hawaii and Nevada.
