Franklin Templeton buys CoinFund spinoff to boost crypto arm

- Franklin Templeton has agreed to acquire 250 Digital, a firm spun off from the venture capital company CoinFund.
- The acquisition will lead to the creation of Franklin Crypto, a dedicated unit focused on institutional investors, pensions, and sovereign-wealth funds.
- The move leverages recent market volatility to attract top-tier crypto trading talent and expand the firm’s digital asset capabilities.
Expansion of Institutional Crypto Offerings
Franklin Templeton, a global investment management giant with over $1.7 trillion in assets under management, is significantly broadening its footprint in the digital asset space. The firm has reached an agreement to purchase 250 Digital, which recently separated from CoinFund in January. This new division, rebranded as Franklin Crypto, is designed to cater specifically to the needs of sophisticated institutional clients, including sovereign-wealth funds and pension funds.
While the financial specifics of the deal remain confidential, the leadership of the acquired entity brings substantial expertise. 250 Digital is headed by CoinFund veterans Christopher Perkins and Seth Ginns, who will now integrate their strategies into the broader Franklin Templeton ecosystem.
Leveraging Market Volatility for Talent
The decision to finalize this acquisition was influenced by recent fluctuations in the cryptocurrency markets. Sandy Kaul, the head of innovation at Franklin Templeton, noted that the significant market selloff provided a strategic window to act. According to Kaul, the current environment presents a unique opportunity to provide a "stable home" for elite crypto trading professionals who may be seeking institutional backing amidst market uncertainty.
Established Presence in Digital Assets
This acquisition is not Franklin Templeton's first venture into blockchain technology. The firm has maintained a dedicated digital assets team of approximately 50 people since entering the sector in 2018. Its existing portfolio includes:
- A specialized tokenized money market fund.
- Spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January 2024.
- Spot Ethereum ETFs introduced in July 2024.
By integrating the expertise of 250 Digital, Franklin Templeton aims to solidify its position as a leading bridge between traditional finance and the evolving digital economy.
