Ethereum Foundation stakes record $46M in ETH

Ethereum Foundation stakes record $46M in ETH
Quick Take
  • Ethereum Foundation staked 22,517 ETH, worth approximately $46 million, marking its largest single-day staking transaction to date.
  • The transaction was directed to the ETH2 Beacon Deposit Contract from the foundation's treasury wallet on Monday at 1:38 a.m. ET.
  • Following this move, the foundation’s treasury still maintains a balance of 147,471 ETH, valued at roughly $302 million.

Unprecedented Staking Volume

On-chain data provided by Arkham Intelligence confirms that the Ethereum Foundation has executed its most significant staking event in history. The transfer of 22,517 ETH to the Beacon Chain deposit contract signifies a major shift in how the nonprofit manages its digital assets. According to Arkham, this specific transaction represents more ether than the foundation has ever committed to staking in a single twenty-four-hour period.

Strategic Treasury Management

This record-breaking activity follows a new treasury policy established for 2025, aimed at utilizing existing assets to generate yield. The foundation began this process last month with a smaller initial stake of 2,016 ETH. The organization has stated that these funds are intended to serve two primary purposes:

  • Enhancing the overall security of the Ethereum network.
  • Funding core operations, including protocol R&D, ecosystem growth, and community grants.

Market Context and Co-Founder Activity

While the foundation increases its staking participation, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has been active in different ways, selling approximately 17,196 ETH in February. Buterin indicated these funds would support the development of open-source software and hardware across various sectors. Amidst these developments, Ethereum was trading at $2,045, showing a 2% increase over the last day and a 6.6% gain over the past month.
