The tech giant has set 2029 as its own target for implementing PQC across its product suite. This timeline is notably more aggressive than previous industry forecasts for "Q-Day," the theoretical point at which quantum machines can compromise existing public-key encryption standards.

Central to this urgency is Willow, Google’s state-of-the-art superconducting quantum processor. Boasting a capacity of 105 qubits, Willow demonstrates that quantum frontiers may be approaching faster than anticipated. Blockchain Networks Prepare for Post-Quantum Era

The cryptocurrency sector is particularly vulnerable to quantum advancements, as current cryptographic algorithms secure billions of dollars in assets. Within the Bitcoin community, the necessity of immediate action remains a subject of intense debate. Blockstream CEO Adam Back has expressed skepticism, suggesting that the risks posed by quantum computing are frequently exaggerated and that significant threats may not materialize for several decades.

Conversely, some researchers are pushing for technical upgrades to the Bitcoin protocol. Ethan Heilman has proposed Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 360 (BIP-360), which introduces a new output type called Pay-to-Merkle-Root. This proposal is designed to shield Bitcoin addresses from short-exposure quantum attacks, though Heilman estimates that such an implementation could take up to seven years to fully realize.
