NovaBay rebrands to SDEV, acquires 9% of SKY token supply
Quick Take
  • NovaBay Pharmaceuticals has officially rebranded as Stablecoin Development Corporation, changing its ticker symbol from NBY to SDEV.
  • The company secured $134 million in a private placement led by high-profile investors including Tether Investments and Framework Ventures.
  • The firm now controls nearly 9% of the total supply of SKY, the governance token for the Sky protocol.

Corporate Transformation and Financing

In a significant pivot from the healthcare sector to the digital asset industry, NovaBay Pharmaceuticals has completed its transition into Stablecoin Development Corporation. The nanocap firm, which previously held a market capitalization of approximately $30 million, is now focused entirely on the cryptocurrency market. This strategic shift was supported by a $134 million private placement, which saw participation from major industry players such as Framework Ventures and Tether Investments.

Significant Accumulation of SKY Tokens

Following its capital raise, the company has aggressively built a position in SKY, the governance token of the Sky protocol (formerly known as MakerDAO). The protocol is responsible for issuing USDS, a decentralized stablecoin backed by various cryptocurrencies.

Key details regarding their holdings include:

  • Total holdings of approximately 2.06 billion SKY tokens.
  • Ownership of roughly 8.78% of the circulating supply.
  • The total value of the position is estimated at $147 million.
  • Over half of the tokens were purchased on the open market at an average price of $0.065 per token.
  • The remaining portion was acquired through the financing deal using a mix of cash and stablecoins.

Staking Operations and Market Performance

Beyond mere accumulation, Stablecoin Development Corporation has integrated itself into the protocol's ecosystem by staking its assets. To date, the firm has earned approximately 26.6 million SKY tokens in rewards. According to the protocol’s official data, the current staking rate for SKY exceeds 10%.

Despite the company's aggressive entry, the SKY token has experienced some volatility, dropping 1.45% over a 24-hour period. This performance lagged behind the broader market, as the CoinDesk 20 (CD20) index gained 4% in the same timeframe. Meanwhile, the company's stock, trading under the NBY ticker before the full switch to SDEV, rose by 5% on Monday.
